Where to Start as a Fresh Graduate

As a fresh graduate, you may feel uncertain about where to begin, especially if you lack resources beyond your labor and entrepreneurial zeal. Transitioning from the academic world to the real world can be challenging. While academic certificates are important, the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. All your dreams can come true if you have the passion to pursue them. Therefore, it is your responsibility to set your future on a constructive, stable, and personally fulfilling path.

We all start our careers just like you – as fresh graduates with little or no experience. While some suggest starting before graduation, it’s never too late. If you are unsure about when and where to begin, the information provided in this article will be helpful to you.

Who is a Fresh Graduate?

A fresh graduate is someone who has recently completed their studies and earned a degree from a tertiary institution. They are part of the skilled workforce but typically have little or no relevant work experience in their field of study. Often, they seek employment opportunities to start their career journey and gain practical experience that will enable them to grow and climb the corporate ladder.

Where Do You Start?

While you may be sitting and complaining that there are not enough jobs and that available jobs require years of professional experience, you are not gaining experience. Here are my suggestions:

  1. Start from Anywhere

Start working as soon as possible; sitting idle will not make you competent. Choose any path by finding something interesting that will help you build competence. Avoid limiting yourself to your field. Do anything as you look for something within your field.

  2. Plan for the Future

Conduct frequent reflections and self-evaluations to figure out your progress, skills acquired, performance, benefits, compensation, and work/life balance. This will help you plan your next steps. Determine whether to continue or when to move to another path.

  3. Document the Reflections

Keep a journal of your daily experiences. It will help you keep a record of what you have acquired and can be used to update your Curriculum Vitae.

  4. Keep Learning

As you work, continue learning. Schedule job training, practice interviewing, and seek other opportunities for growth.

  5. Go for What You Want

Reevaluate your initial thoughts and goals, then pursue what you truly want.

In a Nutshell

My advice is to start working as soon as possible. Find a good entry-level job that can boost your competence. Next, take on more challenging assignments as you gain experience and give it a couple of years. When you have mastered the basics, consider what you want to do next in your career.

As a fresh graduate, you need a mixture of hard work, determination, and proper preparation. By identifying your career goals, building your work experience, tailoring your job applications, preparing for job interviews, and staying positive and persistent, you can increase your chances of finding a job that aligns with your aspirations and sets you on a path to success.
